Selling a business – is this the right time of year?

December 22nd, 2008

The holiday season is here and the economy is slowing down.  In prior years, investors do not look to buy a business from December 15 to January 15.  Just before the holiday season, most investors and bankers are looking to complete what is on their plate now and not start new transactions which need to close soon.  Many people are taking holidays in December and the market is normal slow until everyone has their kids back in school.  Many private schools have longer holidays so that is why it usually not until the middle of next month before they start to think about buying a business.

This does not mean that you do nothing, you should start planning and getting information ready so that you can be ready for when the investors come back.  That means you can start accumulating information. www.thebusinessplace.com is a world wide website. With the internet, people are still able to research from their own home.  That means that you may be contacted before January 15 before the typical investor comes back.  The internet has changed how people find businesses and do their research.  The traditional models such as the normal time off for investors happened in the past but now they can be connected any time from anywhere.  Do not wait to list your business because you could be missing an investor who is researching businesses for sale over the holidays.

  1. Never to soon to start prep to sell a business. Make sure ALL your income is reported. More often than not the owners of cash business fail to report their cash sales only to hurt them when the time comes to sell.
